Even with big telescopes, the planets in our solar system appear incredibly small due to their large distance from Earth.
We amateur astronomers are able to obtain very sharp, high-resolution images of the planets thanks to a technique called ‘Lucky imaging‘, where a high-speed camera takes many thousands of very short photos at high magnification. The best frames are then selected with specialized software for further processing and sharpening.
